Mommy and Me Nosejobs: Mother-Daughter Plastic Surgery on the Rise

There has been a recent increase in plastic surgery among—wait for it—mothers and daughters getting procedures together.

Yeah, I’m serious. The Real Housewives of Orange County’s Lynn Curtin and daughter Raquel went in for, respectively, a facelift and rhinoplasty last year, and rumor has it that Christie Brinkley and Alexa Ray Joel recently followed suit.

Though the reasons behind a decision to have procedures performed together vary, many of the duos start out with the mothers, physicians say. Mom decides to have some surgery and after seeing the fantastic results, the daughter will want to have work done as well. Often times, teams will share a family trait, like their nose or big arms, and decide to have it changed at the same time.

Wow. My mom and I read on the beach together. Sometimes we chillax over yardwork. Occasionally we’ll watch a movie or bond over sautéing chicken. I cannot imagine ever—EVER—getting plastic surgery in tandem with my momma.

The thing is, the mother/daughter dynamic is a complex one, and this doesn’t lessen as a child gets older. If anything, it grows more complex. One of the most tangled pieces is that, in many cases, daughters start to see more and more of themselves in their mothers as time goes on. What message is a woman sending her daughter if she gets plastic surgery? And to get cosmetic procedures done together?? That doesn’t sound like bonding to me; it sounds delusional.

So why do it?

Patients enjoy the camaraderie of healing together and are able to easily relate to one another during the recovery process. The teams enjoy the feeling of undertaking a project together and feeling as if someone knows exactly what they’re doing.

That’s got to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard! Yeah, after getting a nose job, I’m sure this happened:

Alexa: “Yes, Mommy, I know your face is uncomfortable. Don’t worry, I’m going through the recovery process too. We’re healing together.”

Christie: “Isn’t this a great project we’ve undertaken together? Let’s take a minuscule bite of this brownie, spit it into these napkins after we’ve chewed (but not swallowed) it, and plan our next mother/daughter date: spider vein search.”

Wow …
